Virginia Beach Ballet Academy
Virginia Beach Ballet Academy Class Descriptions
Introduction to Ballet (Beginning at age 3 and up)
Imagery, imagination, and self-expression are encouraged while developing a foundation for academic ballet technique. The “ballet barre” is introduced along with floor exercises that develop flexibility. French terms and ballet vocabulary are used throughout the class. The concepts of proper alignment and turn-out are introduced.
Level IA
The student expands beyond the previous level. Exercises that develop flexibility and strength accompany exercises for alignment and turn-out.
Level IB
Curriculum concentrates on correct placement of the body, head, arms, and feet in the five positions and requires that students have already developed good concentration skills.
Level II
The student expands beyond the previous level and is introduced to new vocabulary and exercises.
Level III
More complex steps, combinations, and vocabulary are introduced. For ladies, pointe work is introduced.
Level IV
The student is introduced to more intricate patterns and sequences of steps with emphasis on port de bra and epaulment in all movements. Students expand their classical ballet vocabulary. Combinations are longer and more stylistic. In some classes, ladies will be expected to do the entire barre and center “en pointe.” Classical variations may be introduced.
